About the Greenway's Construction
The Greenway will be constructed in separate phases. The first phase, known as the "western segment," was completed in 2007. This segment connects with the Bay Trail at Garrard Avenue and continues to 23rd Street. The second phase or “eastern segment”, which extends from 23rd Street to San Pablo Avenue, was constructed in 2009. The third phase of the project will connect the Ohlone Greenway in El Cerrito by means of an at-grade crossing on San Pablo Avenue. The environmental studies and preliminary engineering for this final phase will be conducted by July 2010 as stipulated by the Safe Routes to Transit grant. The City is also applying for an additional grant to fund the construction of this phase.
The constructed trail will be the result of many years hard work by the Richmond community. The West Contra Costa County Transportation Advisory Committee, the Contra Costa Transportation Authority, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, Rails to Trails, and Friends of the Richmond Greenway have all played important roles in the completion of this trail and the continuing effort to make it a success.
