Global Campus Vision
On May 15, 2014, the University of California Board of Regents approved the Long Range Development Plan (LRDP) for and University of California, Berkeley Global Campus at Richmond Bay (BGC). The BGC will be the focal point for an international coalition of academic institutions, private sector, and community partners who will collaborate on research projects to address complex global challenges.
The BGC is a new model for global engagement and research integration that will be deeply tied to the main campus and the local community through a variety of educational, public health, community outreach, labor, and transportation partnerships. UC Berkeley, which already maintains programs on the site, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) partnered together to create a LRDP that will guide the development of the Berkeley Global Campus over the next 40 years. The BGC will be located at the Richmond Field Station and nearby 3200 Regatta property, owned by the University of California.
In April of 2014, the Chancellor of UC Berkeley (UCB) and the Director of Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) issued ajoint letter of commitment to strengthen community partnerships between UCB, LBNL, and the Richmond Community. The statement calls for the creation of a Working Group to be co-chaired and staffed by UCB and LBNL. The Working Group will be representative of the Richmond community and organizations actively engaged in four areas defined as priorities by the Richmond community: Education, Local Employment, Procurement and Workforce Training.
