At nine a.m. each morning, Monday through Friday, students of all ages walk through the LEAP front door. Many of our students are seeking help with the General Equivalency Exam. Not having finished high school, we have students as young as 19 and some at retirement age who are attending our program every day.
The room is full as discussion bounces from students to tutor. As the morning group ends, new students brush through our lobby to start their math group. Tutors are working with LEAP students to create home budgets, or simply brush-up on basic math operations.
After lunch we see a steady stream of men and women who want to improve their English. The group grows as the clock hand moves toward 1:30pm.; the room is filled with laughter. In our "Quiet Room" tutors work with pairs or one on one to teach reading and writing. The hum of the morning and afternoon repeats itself in the evening when new students join LEAP for reading, writing, math and GED preparation.
With the help of our tutors we welcome new students and help them reach their goals. Please join our community! Our need for tutors is never-ending. We also need volunteers in the area of web design, mentoring, story telling, graphic arts, fundraising and more.
