On September 16, 2008, the City of Richmond joined other progressive Bay Area cities when it voted to become a signatory of the Urban Environmental Accords, a declaration of more than 100 municipalities worldwide to build ecologically sustainable, economically dynamic, and socially equitable urban futures.
The City of Richmond has committed to the goal of accomplishing 14 of the 21 actions stated in the Accords by year 2012.
These actions are in the seven impact areas of:
- Energy
- Environmental Health
- Transportation
- Urban design
- Urban nature
- Waste reduction
- Water
The Accords provides a framework for collaboration among government, business, community groups, and other key partners. CREST – the City of Richmond Environmental Sustainability Team – was established to coordinate strategies across City departments to achieve those Accords actions.
