A balance of naturally occurring gases dispersed in the atmosphere determines the Earth’s climate by trapping solar radiation, a phenomenon known as the greenhouse effect.
Overwhelming evidence suggests that modern human activities are increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere. These activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels for transportation and electricity generation, introduce large amounts of carbon dioxide and other gases into the atmosphere. Collectively, these gases intensify the natural greenhouse effect, causing global average surface temperature to rise, which is in turn expected to affect global climate patterns.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
, a warming trend of about 1.0 to 1.7° occurred from 1906-2005. Scientists expect that rising temperatures, changing weather patterns, drought, flooding, and sea level rise will be felt at the local level.
