Green Civic Center

Energy performance - The building was designed to exceed minimum energy efficiency standards. Civic Center has high performance heating and cooling systems, insulation, and windows. Energy efficiency lighting was installed and occupancy sensors shut off lights when offices or conference rooms are not in use.

Onsite renewable energy - Photovoltaics were installed on City Hall and the Auditorium. Their combined output provides 15% of the Civic Center's electricity or 175,800 kWh per year. This is equivalent to 139 tons/year of CO2 emissions avoided or 23.1 passenger vehicles removed from the roadways.

Water conservation - Water consumption has been reduced by 46% compared to that of the previous City Hall. This was achieved by installing low-flow fixtures for sinks and showerheads, waterless urinals, and dual-flush toilets.

Water-efficient landscaping - The landscape plan uses 59% less water than that of the previous City Hall. Water-intensive turf areas were eliminated and replaced with drought-tolerant plants.

Recycled-content materials - Construction materials such as the structural steel, ceiling tile, and carpet are made of recycled content.

Stormwater quality - Bioswales, or drainage courses filled with vegetation, were constructed to remove sediment from surface runoff water.

Reduced light pollution - Street lighting is directed downward to where it is needed, and interior lighting automatically turns off during non-business hours.

Certified sustainable wood - Wood products (casework, doors, etc.) are Forest Stewardship Council certified.

Heat island reduction - Concrete pavers, decomposed granite and light-colored concrete reduce the heat island effect that is created by dark surfaces.

Fuel-efficient vehicles - Some parking spaces are dedicated to low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles.
