LEAP is a free program sponsored by the Richmond Public Library in which tutors and learners work one-on-one or in small groups. LEAP's purpose is to help adults develop the skills and confidence they need to achieve their individual goals.

Why LEAP
One in five Americans today cannot read or write well enough to fill out job applications, read bus schedules, labels on prescription medicine bottles, or bedtime stories to their children.  In order for adults to have the power of choice in a society that is dominated by the written word, it is absolutely essential that they read and write well.

Who is Involved
  • Volunteer Tutors: You can help someone else learn to read. All you need is sensitivity and patience.
  • Learners: You must be 16 years old or older and want to improve basic reading, writing, or math skills.
  • Donors: Please feel free to make a tax-deductible donation.

When & Where
Learners and tutors may sign up at any time. Orientation for new learners is held upon entering the program at the LEAP office. New tutor orientation and training is held upon demand. Call the LEAP office to sign up at 510-307-8084.

Tutors and new readers meet at times and places convenient for both. Sessions are held at LEAP, local libraries, places of worship, and recreation centers.

Getting Involved
If you want to help someone learn to read, need help yourself, want to offer your company's services, or want to make a contribution (financial or otherwise), please call LEAP at 510-307-8082.

The Learning Center
LEAP's Learning Center has a fine collection of computer and videocassette programs, educational games, audiotapes, CD-ROM, and other alternative learning materials. There is also an in-house library for new readers and their tutors.
