Report a Crime
How to Report a Crime
Some crimes can be reported directly by you to the police department without having a police officer respond. The process for this is the Citizen Mail-In Report form. This form can only be used for the following types of crimes:
- Lost property
- Vandalism
- Theft incidents where there is no suspect information
For all other types of crimes (crimes against persons, crimes in which the suspect is known, was seen, or can be identified, or crimes which will require extensive follow-up by detectives) you must call the RPD dispatch center at 510-233-1214 and request an officer.

When the incident you wish to report meets the criteria listed above, we very much appreciate your taking advantage of the Citizen Mail-In Report process. It allows our officers to remain on the street preventing crime and responding to emergencies.
If you need more room to write the narrative portion of your report you can do so on the Supplement Information Report Form. This form can also be used to add additional information to reports you have already sent in a Citizen Mail-In Report.
When completing a Citizen Mail-In Report it is important to remember to:
- Type, or print legibly
- Use black, non-erasable ink
- Complete all appropriate boxes
- Be as detailed as possible about the incident and property
If you would like to have a Citizen Mail-In Report form sent to you, please call the RPD Records Section at 510-620-6675 or the Communications Center at 510-233-1214 to request a form.
Because your report will become an official police document, it is important to remind users that filing a false police report is a misdemeanor crime (Penal Code section 148.5).
