Crime Analysis

 Crime Analysis Logo

The core philosophy of the Crime Analysis Unit is to provide Patrol, Investigations and Command Staff proactive criminal, tactical, strategic and administrative crime and intelligence analysis to aid in the prevention, suppression and reduction in crime as well as the apprehension of offenders.

Crime analysis supports a number of department divisions and functions to include: patrol, investigations, special operations and tactical units, patrol deployment, planning and research, crime prevention, Police administration and the citizens of our communities. Richmond Police Department is using crime analysis and intelligence-led policing methods as tools to address crime and quality of life issues proactively instead of reactively.

Crime Analysis also facilitates our newly formed COMPSTAT program which is designed to provide in-depth analysis on crime patterns and trends. COMPSTAT is a dynamic approach to crime reduction, quality of life issues, and resource management.  The process involves the use of timely intelligence to detect crime patterns, isolate crime “hot spots”, and identify other quality of life issues.  The process for the Richmond Police Department will involve gathering and analyzing information as well as holding regular meetings with district commanders to discuss strategies to reduce crime and improve the quality of life for our citizens.

Administratively crime analysis can tell us what our workload is, crime to population ratios, and calls for service to officer ratios. All of which help us develop productive workload analyses that aid in troop deployment and determining staffing needs.

Strategically, crime analysis can look at seasonal and annual trends that help us prepare for anticipated spikes in activity and provide the type of service necessitated by the situation.

Tactically, crime analysis aids in the identification of crime patterns and series; provide intelligence and investigative research which supports and affords direction for tactical operations. These operations are geared to intercede immediately in an ongoing crime spree or series.

Using these methods Richmond Police Department’s goal is to reduce violent crime, increase community outreach, address quality of life issues and make Richmond a safer place for the citizens that we serve.
