Paint Disposal

Reuse and Recycle Leftover Paint
  • Apply an additional coat of paint or combine with other leftovers for a primer.
  • Dispose of dry brushes, rollers and tarps, latex paint, and empty 5 gallon (or smaller) containers in the trash.
  • Donate large amounts of paint to schools, theaters or churches.
  • Scrape containers with a rubber spatula and use all paint in a paint can.

West County Household Hazardous Waste Facility
The West County Hazardous Household Waste Facility accepts leftover paint from residents at no charge. They combine all of the paint into a primer that residents can pick up in 5 gallon buckets, also free of charge. Ask about the Reuse Area at the facility.

Clean Up With Care After Painting
  • Clean latex paint equipment in a sink connected to a sanitary sewer.
  • For oil-based paint, reuse cleaning solvents / thinners and dispose of them at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility or at a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event.
  • Never wash equipment into gutters, streets, or storm drains.
  • Paint out brushes and rollers as much as possible before washing.
