FPC Food Justice Film Series v3 title.jpg
This month, the Richmond Food Policy Council's monthly Food Justice Film Series presents The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people during this difficult time. Cubans share how they transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis, which they call "The Special Period." The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil, a term for the time in our history when world oil production will reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis – the massive reduction of fossil fuels – is an example of options and hope.

Food provided again this month by Richmond's own Liberty Ship Cafe Worker Owned Co-op (Please bring $5 donation to cover the cost of food).

The Food Justice Film Series has been made possible by a generous donation from Nutiva.

This upbeat, colorful report features features progress toward closing gaps in Richmond’s portions of the San Francisco Bay Trail. Thanks to the City of Richmond and East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD), 2.5 miles of Bay Trail are nearing construction. The City is poised to award a contract to build two new trail sections and ready to bid a third, while EBRPD has completed 90% construction designs for two more. Learn also about how the Bay Trail meshes with Kaiser Permanente’s “hot new, fitness trend sweeping the nation …... based on ancient movements dating back to the beginnings of human history”.
