Odor Complaints at West Contra Costa Sanitary Landfill

In 2016, the City received a number of complaints from local residents regarding the odor impacts caused by operations at the West Contra Costa Sanitary Landfill. The City worked with Contra Costa Health Services, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, and Republic Services to address the problem, and eliminate and prevent odors from occurring.

Residents impacted by odor should call the Bay Area Air Quality Management District odor complaint line at 1-800-334-ODOR (1-800-334-6367).

Contra Costa Environmental Health is the Local Enforcement Agency (LEA) for solid waste facilities and conducts routine inspections of the West Contra Costa Sanitary Landfill (WCCSL). The facility was issued a Cease and Desist Order on October 4, 2016, and a work plan for Republic Services has been enacted to mitigate and prevent odors in the future.
