WHAT WE DO
Every week someone walks into our office and asks about learning English or earning a GED. Some people want to get a job, others want to advance their career, and still others want to be able to talk to their child’s teacher. These people are all waiting to learn from you—a volunteer.
Volunteers at LEAP perform a number of jobs including, one-to-one tutors, teaching assistants, receptionists, and mentors. They are a vital part of our program and help build student success both academically and personally. In addition, volunteering at LEAP is more than just doing a specific job. It’s a way to connect and give back to the community. Volunteers build relationships, share their wealth of experience, and help students achieve their goals. It’s volunteers who help ESL students understand what they are buying at the grocery store, who teach GED students to understand algebra, and who mentor students into a new career.
HOW WE DO IT
LEAP seeks volunteers to tutor and mentor students in English as a second language (ESL), GED preparation (reading, writing, science, social studies, and mathematics), Literacy & Adult Basic Education, and Computer Literacy. Basic knowledge of these subjects is required and past tutoring experience is appreciated.
Volunteers attend an orientation, observe a LEAP class, and go through a short training period. Once trained, we will work with you to match your skills and passions with our needs. Volunteering at LEAP requires flexibility, a willingness to learn, and open-mindedness. To find out when our next orientation is or to learn more please contact our main office at 510-307-8084.
