The Richmond Police Marine Unit is comprised of a crew of six police officers. The Unit utilizes three vessels to patrol
Richmond's
shoreline and the San Francisco Bay. The Marine Unit's assets are:
- 37 FT. Moose Boat M2, "Liberty", is a Catamaran style aluminum vessel powered by two Cummings Diesel Turbo engines that generate a total of 850 HP.
- 28 FT. Almar Rigid Aluminum Inflatable Vessel (RAIV), "Rescue 28", is equipped with two Suzuki 4-stroke outboards that generate a total of 500 HP.
- 23 FT. Almar Rigid Aluminum Inflatable Vessel (RAIV), "Rescue 23", is equipped with a Mercury 2-stroke outboard that generates 150 HP.
The Marine Unit's primary mission is to enforce laws, protect the community, conduct search and rescue operations, educate recreational boaters about maritime laws and boat safety. The Unit collaborates with local, State and Federal maritime law enforcement agencies in the mutual goal of protecting identified infrastructures from potential terrorism threats within the San Francisco Bay.
