FAQs Street Sweeping
Street Sweeping Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why does the City perform street sweeping?
Street sweeping helps keep neighborhoods clean, removes debris that can clog storm drains, improves water quality, and enhances the overall appearance of the community.
2. How often are streets swept in my neighborhood?
Most residential streets are swept on a scheduled monthly rotation. Commercial areas and high-traffic corridors are swept on a weekly basis.
3. Do I need to move my car on street sweeping days?
Yes. Vehicles left on the street during posted sweeping times prevent the sweeper from cleaning the curb line effectively and will be subject to a fine.
4. How can I find out my street sweeping schedule?
You can check the City’s website, review street signs posted in your neighborhood, or call the Public Works Department for details.
5. What happens if I don’t move my car during sweeping days?
Vehicles left in the way may receive a parking citation or fine. Vehicles must remain clear of the area for the entire time posted on the sign.
6. Does street sweeping pick up leaves and yard debris?
Yes, but residents should not pile leaves, branches, or yard waste into the street as this can clog equipment. Yard waste should be disposed of properly through green waste bins or scheduled collection services.
7. What happens if the sweeper misses my street?
Occasionally, sweepers may miss a street due to weather, mechanical issues, or obstructions. Contact Public Works to report a missed sweep.
8. Does street sweeping still occur in the rain?
Light rain may not affect sweeping, but heavy rain makes sweeping less effective. Sweeping is often postponed during storms.
9. Can I sweep debris into the street for the sweeper to pick up?
No. Pushing trash, dirt, or leaves into the street is prohibited. Sweepers are designed to collect normal roadway debris, not piles of waste.
10. How does street sweeping help the environment?
Sweeping reduces pollutants such as oil, trash, and chemicals from entering storm drains and waterways. This improves local water quality and helps reduce flooding risks.
11. What happens if my street is scheduled for cleaning on a holiday?
If your street is scheduled for sweeping on a City holiday, it will not be swept until its next scheduled day. To see a list of City holidays, please visit the City’s website.
12. After the sweeper passes my house can I move my vehicle back?
No. Your vehicle must remain clear of the designated route area for the entire time that the signs specify. If parked in the designated area during sweep days & times you could be subject to a citation.
13. If I have a valid ADA placard and blue curb in front of my house, do I still need to move my vehicle?
Yes. Street sweeping happens on a regular schedule allowing for plenty of notice to move your vehicle. To allow for proper cleaning and avoid a citation, you must not be parked in the designated sweeping area during sweeping days and times listed on the signs.
14. What if there is construction happening on my street?
In most cases the street sweeper will continue to sweep the street. If the road is completely closed for construction the area will not be swept. The regular schedule will resume on the next scheduled sweep day.
